Discover: Sam’s “Grace”

My little 7 year old grandson Sammy was doing his own thing and anticipating his time in the pool when his mother told him his room must be cleaned before he entertains any thoughts of the pool!  Begrudgingly he plodded over to his room.  By now mom can see the wheels turning. We all know this little boy wears his heart on his sleeve!  Moments later he gasped…"MOM, why can’t you just give us grace?"

Little did he know that Strength in the Hebrew mind is the equivalent of Grace! When the Hebrew thought of grace, he did not think only of going to heaven, ( or being able to leave his room dirty).  When the Hebrew spoke of the word Grace the word strength is what he thought of. The Holy Spirit reaches into the heart and performs that work to strengthen and empower the will, both to love and to will of God’s good pleasure.

Strength is substantial. A man who works, for example, on his bicepts, will evidence it by way of what he lifts.  He will not necessarily see the strength until he exerts it, then you have th evidence of its substance, but the substance is there.

The same is true of Christ. Grace produces a substantial strength, an empowerment of the heart. No constant altar call, coming forward time after time, but rather a strength that roots and empowers the will to do, to perform God’s good pleasure. It is ever seeking maturation, and having tasted of that strength it will not go back willingly to that which is weak in faith, but it will perceive its own slippage when doubting (or laziness) kicks in. God gives and creates such strength, and creates a resolve in the heart.

So, sorry Sammy! Even if mom should decide to "give you grace", what she’s really saying in that Hebrew mind of hers is… "With the Grace God Gives You Dear Son….Clean Your Room!"

Habakkuk 3:17-18 Althought the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls; Yet, I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
