Discover: House to House
An Epic Memoir of War by David Bellavia and John R Bruning
The last book I read was The Lone Survivor and a reader of my blog suggested, if I liked Lone Survivor, a book about Navy Seals, I’d probably enjoy, well maybe enjoy isn’t the best word out there for an Epic War Memoir, the true story of Fallujah, House to House.
Struggling for survival and honor, David Bellavia stands by his men, leading them house to house in hand to hand combat. As I read this book, my heart was heavy for the young men who give their all for the task at hand, and in the end, search for meaning in it all. Broken cities, broken lives and broken hearts surround not only our military, but the lives of the people living in, or chased from the cities of their birth.
David, working through the decision to leave behind a wife and child, making the military his family, must focus on the task at hand, or find himself dead-cold inside one of the body bags used to keep warm at night. Haunting thoughts of a son left behind in tears, and a cold reply from the woman he loved, rack his memory as he faces the battle of a lifetime with insurgents mocking and poised for the kill.
Truly a riveting book, David does the painful job of placing his readers inside his own head and in the house next to him as buddies are killed, maimed, followed by dogs waiting for their next meal, reporters…some good, some bad… helping or hindering, thoughts of a God he knew growing up, fearful of Him, never being able to recon his calling, his mission and his instinct for not only survival with the need to kill the insurgents, all the way up to the times he is startled as he finds himself "praying", and thinking over and over to himself "The Power of Christ compels you!"
Great read with the ability to deepen your understanding of what our military goes through and some have such a hard time talking about. If you’ve been there, and want someone you love to get a better understanding of what you’ve been through, and you have words you are unable to utter, share this book with them, and expect a little more understanding upon their completion of this true story.
Thanks for taking the time David, to open my eyes, and the eyes of the woman you love, and eventually the little boy who will one day grow up and understand what his daddy was compelled to do.
I hope someday David Bellavia Reads Psalm 144 verse one where another David long ago wrote, "Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight."
