Discover: Friendships

I’ve discovered over the years there are many different kinds of friendships. Some grab hold for a time and fade quietly into the woodwork. Some start very early in life and get stronger as the years go by. Some, once strong, end abruptly, leaving a hole in your heart that cannot be mended.  And then there are some friendships that come in a wrapped package, delivered, per sae, to your door in such an unexpected way, that you know the hand of the Lord is in it.

All of those types of friendships, I, have been blessed to have, and the most powerful of them all was the last. While I understand the Lord’s hand is in EVERYTHING we do… predestined from before the world began, some of them are hand delivered in such a way, that the Grace of the Lord is more apparent… as in the case with my friend, Kathy.

Kathy was a runner. I am, and always have been a walker! Although I walked with a quite gait, Kathy would breeze past me as she ran in our subdivision…leaving me in the dust, so to speak. I continued in my walk and as I passed her driveway, she smiled and said that what she had to say may sound very strange…but would I like a walking partner?  Now… my answer of course was a resounding YES, as I had just moved into the area and one of my former strong friendships ended abruptly, thus leaving that gaping hole in my heart. I explained to her that she certainly saw me Walking… not RUNNING….but she thought she’d appreciate a good strong walk verses the runs she had been executing every day.

Kathy and I made our plan to meet half way the next day and away we went. We walked in the early morning hours, in the freezing weather as well as the beautiful summer weather. We shared our faith in Christ, the ups and downs of life and the cataclysmic events of child rearing. Kathy and I prayed together and shared Scripture together, and despite our differences  in doctrine, we found that loving the same Christ was what bonded us together from the beginning.

Kathy ended up taking a full time position at a nursing home 40 minutes away from home, so our time together was mired, but our love for each other remains strong. I’m looking forward to the time when she’s a stay at home wife again, and we can walk and enjoy each other’s company.

Both of us have slowed down emensely in the last few years, (no more 13 minute miles for us),  but the tugging of our hearts for Christian female companionship will get us back on the road, even if it is in a car to a coffee shop instead of an early morning walk with flashlights in hand.

God is good.  I share many other friendships in life…and perhaps later, I’ll tell you of a few of those. I’d love to hear your stories, for He is a Gracious King who is mindful of us and visits us in our iinfirmiteis.

Psalm 8: 3 and 4.When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
