Discover: Samaritan Ministries Healthcare Sharing

I’m going to try to tell you what it’s like to be part of Samaritan Ministries, a place where people who are part of the ministry, write a check once a month to another family who has entrusted their health care needs to the caring family of Samaritan ministries. And that’s what it feels like; like you’re part of a family. Every month there are people in need of help… a family burdened by an illness or accident… a family dependent upon other Christians for their major health care needs.

After years and years of blindly sending a check to one insurance company after another, the gift of being able to send a check to a family, real live people, is like a breath of fresh air. Sharing resources with other Christians verses paying insurance premiums works! Samaritan Ministries is not an insurance program.

I remember the first time I saw the movie about Samaritan ministries, I thought to myself, "How can I trust the people who are supposed to send ME money will actually do so?  ”What ifs" and doubts assailed me. But then I came to the realization that it wasn’t the people I doubted, but the Lord. Is He or isn’t He able to meet all my needs?

When a need arises, Samaritan Ministry sends out a simple form to aid the family in itemizing their medical bills. You receive a list of people who will be sending in the money needed for your bills. And just like faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, this form of sharing isn’t a blind faith. It is a well planned system that works.

Sharing medical needs with other individuals is more than just paying the bills. When time permits, cards and notes filled with Scripture and daily encouragement and promises of prayer accompany the payments.  People who participate tend to believe that the joy of the Lord will be their strength.

I can honestly say I never received any prayer support from an insurance company, and I’ve been through my share of them. Every year we, as home business owners, search in vain for a better and less expensive policy. It’s hard to imagine that the original intent of the insurance company was to help one another. It’s turned into big business now and perhaps soon to be part of the government’s business. Meanwhile, it’s truly a blessing to be part of people’s lives instead of a conglomerate that pays for medical treatments not blessed by the Lord.

Galatians 6 is the model for Samaritan Ministries. These verses tell us to Bear one another’s burdens and in doing so we fulfill the law of Christ! It also tells us to bear our own burdens, and when able that is exactly what we do. Small "burdens" are born without the aid of Samaritan Ministries, and the larger needs are shared.

Is it dependable? Does it work? Ask others who have been helped by Samaritan Ministries. They are accountable and the integrity of Samaritan Ministries can be counted on. It’s a place where Christian community is practical and real.

It’s important to be concerned for others. It’s a learned art, and Samaritan Ministries helps you learn the process of reaching out to your neighbor, which is truly a test of our Love of Christ. How do you handle your neighbor?

The blessing of actually be part of the Body of Christ working together strengthens me every month. We help bear one another’s burdens by helping them meet their medical needs.
