Discover Sam’s Wish: Did he sing the Star Spangled Banner at the Brewer game?

Today was Sam’s big day

Escorted to the Brewer game in a huge black limo, a red carpet laid out on the ground before him, with all of his raving fans cheering as he exited the Limo… Sam began his day in the sun.

Sam's Make a Wish: Greeted by Star War's CharactersStar Wars characters lined the walk way, ready to greet him and have the privilege of having their picture taken with such a young star! The Make a Wish staff lined up to begin their extraordinary day with him with a staff picture and escorted Sam over to the bouncing house where he was the first to enter the bouncing maze.

Corey Hart, the Milwaukee Brewer who sponsored Sam’s Wish, held an opening ceremony under one of the many huge white tents, filled with food, soda, chips, candy, beer and brats, hotdogs and chicken enough for all. Another tent held a raffle where the prizes seemed almost too good to be true. 10 dollars got you 15 tickets, and hopeful purchasers carefully placed their raffle tickets in the colorful boxes next to the prizes of their choice.

Sam was whisked away with his Dad, Aaron, (who, by the way was not hiding somewhere as his mother had anticipated… but was having just as much fun, if not more than the star of the day. My sincere apologies, Aaron. Mom’s proud of you!) Aaron and Sam drove away in the golf cart with Corey Hart and headed for the much coveted locker room (sorry mom, no women allowed.. you’ll have to get your wish answered a different day.) There Sam was electronically wired to Corey Hart where their conversation was taped and played during the game on the Radio Broadcast.

And then it was time for all of us to enter the Stadium… and wait to see! Would he sing??? Would he bow out gracefully?  Armed with headphones to block out the resonance of his own voice… Sam’s name was announced as we were all instructed to stand and remove our caps in honor of our Nation’s National Anthem… and then… in the silence of the crowd, you began to hear a quiet little voice…”Oh Say, Can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed, at the twilights last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, ore the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming. And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh say dost that Star Spangled Banner Yet Wave, ore the Land of the FREE and the home of the brave!

I know there wasn’t a dry eye in the Sam family crowd. He had sung it and sung it well. We’re all so proud of you Sam.

I closed my last blog post about Sam’s wish to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the Brewer game, with the little known fact that I too had that very same wish as a young girl. I mentioned singing it “vicariously” through a little 6 year old grandson, Sam. I had recorded my version of the Star Spangled Banner, and emailed it to him so he could practice at home!

Well, when all was said and done, that little boy made his way over to this grandma, and said, “You know what, Grandma?   Do you know why I sang so well?  I sang so well because I heard your voice in my headphones! I was singing with you. I don’t know how your voice got in my headphones, but it was, so I sang along”

I don’t know if that little boy has any idea what those few simple sentences meant to me. It was a gift from my Lord, who allowed this grandma to sing the National Anthem at the stadium, right along side her precious little grandson… even though no one knew I was there. Thank you, Sam. Maybe someday you’ll know the gift you gave your grandma this day. God bless you and the USA!

I am so blessed and touched by your sharing this tender moment with me. God has truly blessed you with such a wonderful Corey. My oldest son is Corey, too. I’m so glad to know you, and may God bestow His sweetest comfort to you. I love you, dear. Helen, your new twitter friend

Thank you Helen, Corey will also grant a wish to another Make a Wish kid. He gets to meet Heinz Ward of the Pittsburg Steelers! Sam was just on TV. He did so well.

. The Lord has truly made an incredibly small world. I knew that Corey Hart has and continues to sponsor wish’s through the MAWF because I hear him speak about some of the moving events while cutting his hair as he and several of the players come to Sport n Cuts for haircuts. I had actually heard him speak of Sam’s upcoming wish just this past week but I did not connect it all until now. I too am touched by this story and feel blessed for knowing you. It made my day. The story, pictures and video made it feel as though we where there. Thank you for sharing this incredibly moving event.

What a marvelous Lord we have to show us “tokens for good” I just memorized recently. “Lord, show me a token for good, that they that hate me may see and be ashamed: Because thou, Lord have helped and comforted me”. Psalm 86:17 Just these “small” things Dave, make us to know our Lord loves and sustains us. His mercy is new every morning. My heart is full! When I learned that my voice was inside his headphones…and that I was singing along with him, I was blessed beyond all measure. He’ll remember Grandma sang with him that day, and that for me, is the best gift I could ever have gotten. Please thank Corey personally for me. His sponsorship of the event was a Godsend. I’m so thankful he comes to Sport n Cuts for haircuts. Welcome him to join you as you worship with us Dave. Thanks again for your post.

I was praying that Sammy would not freeze up so that he would be able to sing, but I was sad that I couldn’t get to a television to see the outcome. Thank you so much for posting the photos and the momentous, joyous occasion. I understand the stadium was a sold out crowd, and I hope that Sam touched many hearts…he certainly has touched mine through your story….from one grandma to another! Thanks for the post.

Thanks Kathy, I missed you yesterday, but certainly did have a wonderful day watching Sam. When he came to me with that little …the reason I did so well comment… I was thankful to my Lord for this so great a gift. Being a grandma is such a blessing…and being your friend is just one more token of good He gives to me! See you soon.
