Discover: The Star Spangled Banner through my Grandson, Sam

Sam and GrandmaSam will be singing the Star Spangled Banner

at the Brewer Game Sunday July 12,2009. He is my 6 years old grandson and has suffered with pins and needles and x-rays and surgeries and seizures for a number of years now.  The Make a Wish Foundation has made it possible for him to join Corey Hart, who is the Honorary Chair of the event, and the rest of the Brewers for Make a Wish Foundation’s  25th year Celebration this year.

We all look forward to hearing Sam sing. The Make a Wish Foundation volunteers are so enthusiastic about granting this young boy’s wish. One volunteer shared with me that he’d have to say,  "SAM’S WISH" was probably the most unusual wish he’s ever had the privilege of putting together. Most kids, he tells me, want to go to Disney World, but not Sam. Putting this wish together, from start to finish, has been quite a challenge, but one they have thoroughly enjoyed.

Sam will be, and has already been regaled with a baseball signed by Ryan Braun, (mom’s favorite Brewer) an unsigned baseball, shirt and hat which will certainly have signatures on it before he heads home that night.  We also had a dinner party at Miller Park at TGIFridays where the food was plentiful and dessert absolutely delicious.

Sam and I walked onto the terrace to see the Stadium and he mused " Grandma, wouldn’t it be great if a plane flew over and said, ‘Sammy’s singing the Star Spangled Banner?"  ( you’d have to hear him say it.. writing it just doesn’t give it the flair Sammy’s slurred sssss’s carry.)

His 2nd wish is being partially fulfilled as he fills his room with Transformers and posters. Even his little brother was treated with a Stuffed Toy Sausage which runs around the Brewer Stadium, ( I believe he obtained the hotdog )a baseball hat and more fun trinkets a 3 year old boy would love.

The Make a Wish Foundation has truly done a beautiful job putting Sam’s Wish together. I commend them all. Even if, for some "strange" reason, this little 6 year old decides that  having his face up on the screen and singing the Star Spangled Banner with his momma, Jolene, mouthing the words to him as he sings….(daddy, i’m guessing, may be hiding somewhere  no one can see him…much too stressful for daddy  whose last wish in the world would be to stand in front of a full house at Miller Park and SING! ) even if he decides it is much too scary, and he does not go through with it… we’ll remember this Brewer Game as the one where "Sammy Sang the Star Spangled Banner," even if it’s only in our hearts.

The Lord has been very good to this grandma. He’s granted her many happy memories and many happy days… and be it known… she’s had a wish in her younger days to sing the National Anthem at the Stadium, too. And NOW she gets to live her dream vicariously through her little Grandson, Sam. Thanks Sam. I love you. God bless you and SING WELL for the Country we all love and pray for and whose banner still waves!
